About the EMI Calculator

The EMI Calculator computes your Equated Monthly Installment for any home, car or personal loan using the standard formula EMI = P × R × (1+R)^N / ((1+R)^N − 1), where P is principal, R is the monthly interest rate and N is the number of monthly instalments, then breaks the total repayment into principal and interest.

It also generates a month-by-month amortization view showing how the interest component is highest in the early instalments and gradually shrinks as principal reduces — understanding this front-loaded interest structure helps you decide whether prepaying a loan early is worth it, since early prepayments save disproportionately more interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is more interest paid in the early EMIs of a loan?

Interest is calculated on the outstanding principal each month. Since the outstanding balance is highest at the start of the loan, the interest portion of each EMI is highest early on and shrinks progressively as the principal reduces — this is normal amortization, not an error.

Does prepaying a loan actually save money?

Yes, prepaying reduces the outstanding principal, which lowers the interest charged in every subsequent EMI. Prepaying early in the loan tenure saves significantly more interest than prepaying the same amount near the end, because more interest-bearing months remain.
